Career and technical education instruction provides content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills for students to further their education and succeed in current or emerging professions. Career development is a lifelong pursuit of answers to the questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What am I meant to do with my life? It is vital that students have a clear sense of direction for their career choice.

Career planning is a critical step and is essential to success. 19 TAC Chapter §127 addresses career development Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for both middle school and high school courses.

In this section you will find suggestions and resources for adding value to career development classroom instruction and for creating partnerships with industry to enrich Work Based Learning opportunities.

Curriculum Resources

In this section you will find the TEKS, Scope and Sequence documents and suggested lesson plans for the courses in 19 TAC Chapter 127.
Career Development courses available for middle school are §127.2. Investigating Careers and §127.3. College and Career Readiness, both adopted in 2015 for implementation in 2017-2018.
Courses available for high school are §127.12. Project-Based Research (One Credit), §127.13. Applied Mathematics for Technical Professionals (One Credit), §127.14. Career Preparation I (Two Credits), §127.15. Career Preparation II (Two Credits), and §127.16. Extended Career Preparation (One Credit), all adopted in 2015 for implementation in 2017-2018.

Students are encouraged to participate in extended learning experiences such as career and technical student organizations and other leadership or extracurricular organizations. Please refer to the CTSO binder (https://txcte.org/binder/career-and-technical-student-organizations) for suggestions on how to integrate CTSO activities into classroom instruction, to provide additional valuable student experiences.
