CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Business Law course scope and sequence within the Business Management and Administration Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Business Manager program of study within the Business Management and Administration Career Cluster® provides helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. This document is designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

In this lesson, the students will be able to understand the system of checks and balances in the U.S. government and distinguish between state and national legal issues.

In this lesson, students will learn how ethics are reflected in our laws and the importance of ethics in running a business sustainably.

In this lesson, students will examine the different types of law, courts and regulations in the judicial system.

In this lesson, students will learn to better understand the jurisdiction and constitutional issues that arises with Internet usage.

In this lesson, students will learn about and compare different types of laws that are relevant to the field of Business.

In this lesson, students explain the growth of law, the difference between common law and positive law, and identify the origin of the US legal system. Students will also have the opportunity to learn from the mural project.

This lesson helps students distinguish between a legal and illegal contract in today's business environment.

Upon completion of this lesson, the student will define how duress and undue influence void a contract, and develop a scenario of a situation that involves undue influence or duress.

In this lesson, students will learn about contracts in business and the role of legal capacity within organizations.

In this lesson, students will define fraud and describe the remedies for mistakes that can make a contract voidable or void. Students will conduct investigations of suspicious financial activity, such as money-laundering efforts.

In this lesson, students will recognize and describe classes of contracts, defective agreements, essentials of negotiability, and when consideration is present only under limited circumstances.

In this lesson students will learn about consideration, the difference between a gift and a binding promise, and what a contractual promise entails. Class discussion and scenario practice are included. 

In this lesson, students will learn about the acceptance and will be able to explain requirements of an effective acceptance. Students will also compare bilateral and unilateral agreements.

This lesson will demonstrate some case scenarios where consideration is not necessary for an agreement, as well as the purpose of promissory estoppel.
