Practicum in Business Management

CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Practicum in Business Management course scope and sequence within the Business Management and Administration Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Program of Studies within the Business Management and Administration Career Cluster provide helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. These documents are designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

This introductory unit will assist teachers and students to gain an overview of the schedules and forms that will be used throughout a successful Business course as well as a variety of lessons and activities to help guide students through a successful program.

In this lesson, students will learn to demonstrate characteristics necessary to be a successful student in the Business Management and Administration program.

Practicum in Business Management is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Practicum experiences occur in a paid or unpaid arrangement and a variety of locations appropriate to the nature and level of experience.

This lesson in the Business Practicum course uses the online O*Net system to guide student through a series of activities to explore business occupations and develop a personal resume, cover sheet and appropriate letter of resignation.  

This lesson will help students prepare to enter the workforce by demonstrating word-processing skills in the form of business letters, job acceptance letters, memorandums, business memos, price lists, and business reports.

This lesson is an introduction to professional standards expected in the workplace environment. This lesson encourages students to understand how to look and behave professionally in the workplace.

Upon completion of this lesson, students will defend the purpose of management as it relates to efficient operation of a business. Lessons also address the team and interpersonal skills required for success in business and management.

In this lesson, students will learn the importance of using new technology safely and responsibly, as well as purchasing the supplies and equipment necessary for maintaining a safe work environment.

In this lesson, students will learn about ethics, analyze actions for ethical dilemmas, and write a personal code of ethics for business and personal use.

This lesson is designed to assist students in developing technological proficiencies in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations to create effective business-related documents, as well as in developing effective webpages.

This lesson provides students with specific practice, so that they can utilize professional communication skills while participating in the business management practicum experience.

In this lesson, students will explore the four phases of a project and explain why procrastination should be avoided. Students will also practice project management skills.

This lesson helps students learn how to calculate discounts and markups as part of this retail math lesson. 

Effective leadership is an essential key to any business success. A leader can be a CEO of an organization or a first-year employee who leads his/her team to success behind the scenes. Great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections. This lesson will help you understand the leadership qualities you possess, as well determine the successful characteristics necessary in business leaders today.

In this lesson, students will complete goal setting activities and develop a mentor and mentee partnership.

This lesson provides students with and overview of project management and a project for students to practice project management skills.

In this lesson, students will apply previously learned skills such as, teamwork, interpersonal, communication and human relations, for working effectively in the workplace.

In this lesson, students will investigate scholarship resources and receive assistance in applying for scholarship funding.
