CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Correctional Services course scope and sequence within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

This lesson introduces students to the rules of conduct for employees in correctional facilities. Students will have the opportunity to assess and analyze various scenarios to determine the proper conduct in the given situation. 

Regardless of the field, each organization has some standards by which it operates and expects its employees to follow.  The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) is no different.  Professionalism and ethics play a key role in an employee’s success within the agency. Without them, you may find yourself “behind closed bars.”

In this lesson, students will learn and practice verbal communication skills necessary for municipal, county, state, or federal correctional officers.

This lesson introduces students to the history of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Knowing the history is important for establishing where the system began, and the struggles it has overcome to become the agency it is today.

In this lesson, students will learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in a correctional facility, which is a major first aid safety procedure.

In this lesson, students will learn about various infections and prevention measures and treatments. Students will be expected to identify various infections based on the symptoms in different scenarios.

In this lesson, students examine the history of corrections in Texas and the United States, explore the impact of the United States legal system on the correctional system and differentiate between the civil and criminal justice systems and explain how change impacts correctional services.

This lesson, provides students the opportunity to learn about the special requirements for handling hazardous materials to maintain a safe working environment.

This lesson introduces students to the rules of conduct for employees in correctional facilities. Students will have the opportunity to assess and analyze various scenarios to determine the proper conduct in the given situation. 

In this lesson, students focus on constitutional law to examine protocols outlined by the 14th Amendment, summarize 5th Amendment rights, and examine trial, jury and due process rights.

In this lesson, students will understand the current issues in Correctional Facilities so they can become effective correctional officers.

This lesson introduces students to the interrogation procedures. For law enforcement agents in all fields (police, court, and corrections) it is important to understand the rights of the prisoners and how to conduct interrogations while protecting those rights.

In this lesson, students will explore the differences between the criminal and civil justice systems and how changes in those systems impact the correctional system.

In this lesson, students will participate in a role-playing activity in which they will assume the role of a corrections officer dealing with a disabled patient.

It is essential that correctional officers understand these issues and the implications. In this lesson, students will discuss these future issues and implications. Students will also complete an activity in which they will research and develop a recruitment campaign for employees in a local correctional services operation.

In this lesson, students will analyze the safety procedures that take place in various tasks at a correctional facility including cell and inmate searches.  

In this lesson, students will explore the concept of self defense using pressure points. Students will have the opportunity to practice these methods with teacher's supervision.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the various components of prison emergency plans and procedures. They will have the opportunity to create a floor plan for a prison and determine an emergency plan for that floor plan for various scenarios.

In this lesson, students will learn about the daily operations of a correctional facility through independent projects, group presentations, and discussions.
