Law Enforcement I

CTE TEKS - Implemented 2017-2018, adopted in 2015

Law Enforcement I course scope and sequence within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® summarizes the content to be taught, and one possible order for teaching the units of instruction. A brief description of each unit and the corresponding TEKS are included. This scope and sequence may be adapted or adopted by the local education agency.

Based on the House Bill 5 Foundation High School Program, the Lawyers and Arbitrators program of study within the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security Career Cluster® provides helpful information, including the core courses and career-related electives in high school that will help prepare students for their career goals. This document is designed for students, but can also be used by administrators, counselors, teachers, business and industry representatives, and parents.

This lesson provides an overview of cultural diversity and encourages students to investigate cultural influences in law enforcement.

This lesson is an introduction to the communication skills necessary to work in law enforcement. 

In this lesson, students will learn proper procedures for searching buildings. Students will perform a mock building search, which will include developing hand signals with a partner and interviewing witnesses.

The Bill of Rights protects the rights of everyone involved in the criminal trial process. Law Enforcement officers must understand the rights in order to protect them. This lesson incorporates scenarios that help students better understand the Bill of Rights.

This lesson introduces students to basic functions of the US court systems. Students also learn to differentiate the state and federal court structures and cases.

In this lesson, students will learn about criminal procedures, the Fourth Amendment, Mapp v. Ohio (1961), Terry  v. Ohio (1968), and Tennessee v. Garner (1984). Students will watch a search and seizure video, present about one of the court cases, and determine the primary and secondary evidence in a variety of scenarios.

In this lesson, students will learn about civil law and criminal law. Students will also role play a civil or criminal offense and create an advertisement for a civil lawyer or criminal lawyer.

Similar to Law Enforcement professionals, individuals employed in the field of Security Services must maintain a high standard of professionalism and integrity. Within this unit students will learn how ethics plays a key role in the daily tasks that security professionals face. In this lesson, students will explore ethics in security services by responding to security scenarios.

In this lesson, students will learn about a variety of assault calls that police officers respond to. Students also distinguish the appropriate level of the assault and the charges.

In this lesson, students will learn about the Texas Penal Code related to kidnapping, unlawful restraint, and smuggling.

In this lesson, students will distinguish among the different types of crimes and their punishments, and analyze the different positions people have on gun control.

In this lesson, students will learn about the Texas Penal Code: Criminal Homicide chapter. Students will also have the opportunity to conduct research on a serial killer and give a presentation on the activity.

Police officers must respond to property-crime calls. They must be able to distinguish the call as that of a specific property crime to file the appropriate charges. This lesson provides the student the opportunity to practice this skill using case studies/sample crimes.

This lesson introduces students to the various laws associated with crimes that are sexual in nature. 

This lesson teaches students about the different types of prosecution and which criminal defenses are available for criminals. Students will then work independently to research a particular defense. Once students have completed this, they will group into teams and create hypothetical situations to present to the class.

In this lesson, students will apply their understanding of the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement during arrests of suspects as required by established criminal procedure and case law.

This lesson introduces students to various scenarios of Miranda warning.

This lesson covers Community-Oriented Policing which is a recent and controversial concept in law enforcement. 

This lesson provides opportunities for students to investigate victims' rights through discussion and projects.Students in law enforcement will encounter victims of crime and need to be able to relay the rights afforded them under state and federal laws such as the  Victim and Witness Protection Act of 1982, the Victims of Crime Act of 1984, the Victims Rights and Restitution Act, the Child Victims Bill of Rights of 1990, and the Victim Rights Clarification Act of 1997.

In this lesson, students discuss processing and rights for juveniles in custody.

This lesson describes the most common drugs currently in use today. It discusses the signs and symptoms for each of the drugs, as well as signs of drug use in general. 

This lesson teaches the students to analyze law related to victims and witnesses. Also encourages the students, to apply techniques used to assess risk in vehicle stops, to understand and analyze traffic laws contained in the Texas Transportation Code and their applications.

In this lesson, students will define different types of reports and their functions, identify what makes a good police report, investigate a burglary case, and write a complete report.

A big part of a police officer’s job is responding to crimes and crime scenes. It is crucial that evidence is found, protected, and properly collected to help find who committed the crimes and/or so it can be used in court for the criminal conviction of the suspect(s). This lesson introduces students to the correct way of crime scene search.

Crime Scene Investigators are often expected to develop latent fingerprints on items of evidence before comparisons of fingerprints can be made. In this lesson, students will learn about the different types of fingerprints and the chemicals used to pick them up at crime scenes. A lab is included.
